Stump Grinding, Done Properly

A stump is the part of a tree job people put off, and then mow around for five years. At The Top Tree Service Corp grinds and removes stumps across Suffolk County, from one in the front lawn to a dozen left behind by a lot clearing. Grinding vs. removal

  • Stump grinding (most jobs): a grinder chews the stump into chips 6–12 inches below grade. The roots stay and rot over a few years. Fast, cheap, no crater; you rake out the chips, add topsoil and seed.
  • Full stump and root removal: the stump and the main roots are dug and pulled out. Needed when you're building (a patio, an addition, a pool), replanting a tree in the exact spot, or dealing with roots in a septic field or under pavers. More digging, more cost, a hole to fill.
  • Surface root removal: roots lifting a walkway or driveway can often be cut back and ground without taking the tree, if the tree can spare them. We'll tell you if it can't.

Access

Our grinders fit through a standard gate, so backyard stumps are fine. Tight side yards, slopes and stumps next to fences, foundations or buried utilities (call 811 is on us) just take more care. Tell us about sprinkler lines and invisible-fence wire so we can find them first.

What happens to the chips

Left in a pile for you to spread as mulch, or raked and hauled away with the rest of the debris. If you want the hole backfilled with topsoil and seeded so it disappears into the lawn, ask at the estimate and we'll price it in.

Common Questions

How deep do you grind a stump?

Well below grade, deep enough to plant grass or a small shrub over it. If you plan to plant another tree in the same spot, tell us and we go deeper and chase the main roots.

Can you grind a stump in a tight spot?

Yes. The grinder fits through a standard gate, and the mini skid steers handle the chips, so backyards and side yards are routine.

What happens to the grindings?

Your choice: left in a pile to use as mulch, or raked out and hauled with the rest of the debris. Either way is in the written price.
